Mundesley on Sea

The name Mundesley is thought to be of either Anglo-Saxon or Norse origin and actually appears in the Doomsday Book as Muleslai.

Mundesley today is a friendly unhurried and uncommercialised village with a resident population of around 3000. It is pronounced muns-lee.

Mundesley is renowned for its magnificent award-winning long sandy beach (it has been a European Blue Flag winner for clean beach award for several years) offering safe bathing. During the summer months lifeguards and the Volunteer In-shore Lifeboat patrol the central promenade.

Also well known are the cliff-top walks, which have, in the past, unearthed many fossils including a complete mammoths skeleton!

Mundesley is an open place and a walk through the village will find the open park area of Gold Park, well cared flower and scrub beds and an attractive mill pond – the mill was destroyed by fire in1956 – however, many water fowl flock to beg a piece of bread if it is offered.  From here a stream meanders through The Dell to the sea.  In the past this was a landing area for Sailing Colliers where coal was unloaded, the returning cargo being grain and other farming produce and hence many of the older locals refer to this area as the Coal Yard.  The restored ‘Paston or Stow Mill’ is a short walk away.

Mundesley offers a good selection of local amenities to cater for all basic requirements.  There is a good selection of hostelries, a golf links in the village (and also a crazy golf park) and nearby in Gimingham, Roseacre Stables can offer you riding lessons by the qualified owner.

In August, there is 'Boat Day' where the local Volunteer Lifeboat crew have a fete on the beach, with stalls together with an Air/Sea rescue demonstration. Also in August, the Mundesley Festival offers family entertainment with local and nationally recognised stars performing at the local Coronation Hall.

Mundesley is an ideal base for activities such as golfing (also ‘crazy golf), walking, sea and fresh water fishing, bird watching, hang gliding, paragliding, windsurfing and sailing   If you wish to venture away from Mundesley there are numerous things to do to suit children to senior citizens, active or relaxed past times visiting National Trust properties and gardens and other great days out in Norfolk (see ‘activities and attraction’ page).
